Cally hero, Mana Abbas, recognised at Islington’s civic awards

Islington’s annual civic awards ceremony on Monday evening, 23rd March, included recognition of a true Cally Hero, Mana Abbas. Eight awards were given by the Mayor of Islington, Cllr Jason Jackson, to residents whose community work makes Islington a stronger, safer and more equal place for all.
Mana Fatima Al‑Sharif Abbas Al‑Sharif lives on the Bemerton Estate in the heart of the Cally. She has volunteered for thirty years supporting residents on the estate, especially women of Somali heritage and their families.
Described by the Leader of the Council, Una O’Halloran as “a trusted friend, a champion for families and children, she has unstintingly helped people access support to improve their lives.” Mana is a stalwart of the Jean Stokes Centre helping with regular events for children, and helping to cook for the many events at “Jean’s Cafe” at the centre and the annual Cally Festival.
Civic Awards were also presented to a dedicated foster carer, a team supporting vulnerable residents, and a young leader campaigning for safer streets. Each year includes the Ben Kinsella Award to celebrate a young person making an outstanding contribution in their community.

In challenging times, it is our community champions – neighbours, volunteers, carers and young leaders – who show us what hope, solidarity and compassion truly look like. Each of our winners has made a remarkable contribution to the lives of others. Their dedication inspires us all, and I am proud to recognise their achievements.”
